Now let’s put what you learned about Venn to Text Questions into practice!

1 When considering date proposals, Camden considers the following four factors. How many more people are both witty and have status (among other traits) than have just have a steady income?
  • 1
    0

    Explanation

The answer is B.  The overlap between the circle and the rectangle has a total of 6 people within it. There are 4 people in the section of the pentagon which does not overlap with any of the other shapes. Therefore, there are two more people who have both wit and status among other traits than those who just have a steady income.

2 Fifty-five people applied for a job at Apfel who did background checks on all of these. The investigators created a Venn diagram of four key red flag areas. Apfel do not interview candidates found to be lazy or who have two or more red flags. How many more are not eligible for an interview than who are?
  • 3
    -1

    Explanation

    The answer is C.

There are fifty-four people in the Venn diagram so there was one person with none of the red flags. This person added to the non-overlapping regions excluding the circle for laziness make 5 + 8 + 7 + 1 = 21. Those in the overlaps and the circle add up to 34. This means that the difference is 13.

3 The Times Rich List reveals the possessions of a number of rich individuals. How many more do not have a private yacht than have a villa in Spain?
  • 0
    0

    Explanation

The answer is A. The number who have a villa in Spain is all the numbers within the hexagon. 18+12+12+12+9+19 = 82. The number who do not have a private yacht is all the numbers outside of the triangle. 19+12+9+12+18+15 = 85.

This means that the difference is 3.

25 is the difference between the number with a private yacht and the number with a villa in Spain.

57 is the number with a private yacht.

82 is the number with a villa in Spain.

85 is the number without a private yacht

“I can’t bear people who own Gucci and Vivienne Westwood at the same time. I can bear only those who pick elegance like owning The Alkemistry pieces only or affordable like owning only Tiffany.” An Instagram influencer.

4 How many more of these surveyed people could this influencer bear than not bear?
  • 1
    1

    Explanation

    The answer is D.

There are 12 people who own both Vivienne Westwood and Gucci. 8 people own only Tiffany and 6 who own only The Alkemistry pieces.

There are thus 14 people the individual can bear. Therefore, the difference is 2.

15 is the number she can bear.

12 is the number she cannot bear.

9 is the number if the overlap between Gucci, The Alkemistry and Vivienne Westwood is missed – her dislike is of all those who have both brands – even in combination with a third.

this is still confusing why isn't it 2?

5 A new comedy panel show wants to showcase one new talent per episode. The producers have made this Venn Diagram to shortlist those who they are considering. Their ideal candidate is quick-witted but not crude. Or, they are an affordable one-liner comedian. How many are eligible for the next stage of selection?
  • 2
    10

    Explanation

    The answer is B.

The three sections of the pentagon excluding the intersection with the crescent moon added to the intersection between the parallelogram and the trapezius gives:

    12 + 10 + 12 + 9 = 43.

42 is all of the quick-witted comedians including crude ones.

51 is all of the quick-witted comedians including crude ones and the affordable one-liner ones.

59 is all of the quick-witted comedians and all of the affordable comedians.

NB: There have been several comments struggling with the logic of this question. As further explanation, please see the diagram below. In the exam, you can use your hands to block parts of the diagram you’re trying to ignore as a tactic to help with these questions. (After checking the screen you’re working on is not touch screen!)

I’m clear on the logic of not double-counting 12, but why is the Crude figure excluded from the second set of criteria (which do not specify this characteristic)?

I disagree with this. The 8 inside the crescent should be counted for the affordable one-liner.

Good spies have a combination of three or more of:

    • Bravery
    • Loyalty
    • Civic pride
    • Duplicitousness
    • Intelligence

6 In terms of X and Y, how many of the above would make good spies?
  • 3
    6

    Explanation

The answer is B.  5 + 1 + 3 + Y = 9 + Y. X is not within an overlap of three or more so is not included in the figure. Y is, however. 5 is the overlap of loyalty, duplicitousness and bravery. 1 is the overlap of loyalty, duplicitousness and intelligence, 3 is the overlap of intelligence, loyalty, duplicitousness and civic pride, and Y is the overlap between intelligence, duplicitousness and civic pride.
