1. Which one of the following most closely parallels the reasoning used in the above argument?
  • 23
    3

    Explanation

    The correct answer is D.

To do X (take your practical test), you must first do Y (pass your theory test). You did not do Y (pass your theory test), so you cannot do X (take your practical test).

Substituting X for ‘enter China’ and Y for ‘have a visa’, shows that D most closely parallels the reasoning above.

We have just installed a new boiler in our house. It has cost £4700 to install, but it will last for 9 years before it needs replacing. Nevertheless, the supplier assures us that it will cut our heating costs by 30%. This is good news as we currently pay, on average, £500 every quarter year. The supplier insists that it will pay for itself (i.e. save enough money to cover the cost of the purchase, before it needs replacing).

    2. How long will the boiler take to pay for itself?
  • 5
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is B.

Every quarter, the new boiler will save £500×0.30=£150 (as it cuts the heating costs by 30%). So to pay back the initial £4700 paid for installation, it would take £4700/£150=31.33 quarters. We must round up to the nearest quarter rather than down, because at 31 quarters the boiler would have not totally paid for itself, therefore the answer is 32 quarters.

Analysis from the Office for National Statistics tells us that income is far less significant for life satisfaction than things like marital status, having children and a job. Far from being unencumbered, young, free and single, it is in fact the binding of ourselves to others through covenants, contracts and caring responsibilities that provides us with an empowered sense of self. This is hardly surprising. Indeed perhaps the best evidence of the importance of community to our lives is to be found in how our lives are summarised on our gravestones:

‘Mother of four’ or ‘60 years married’ say our tombstones, rarely ‘property tycoon’ or ‘owner of Mazda MX-5 generation four’.

    3. Which one of the following is an underlying assumption of the above argument?
  • 4
    1

    Explanation

    The correct answer is D.

To figure out which of the answer options is the underlying assumption, assume the answer option is false and then see if the argument given in the passage is still valid.

The final sentence of the passage would contradict the argument if D was false; if the inscriptions on gravestones did not reflect what people think is most important in their lives, the best evidence of the importance of community to our lives would not be found in how our lives are summarised on our gravestones. So D is the correct answer.

Everyone with a good idea wants it to have impact, but why do some social innovations go global whilst others remain small-scale? Whether their idea is a pioneering schooling model or a new form of volunteering, social innovators must become campaigners and embrace change in order to have widespread influence. Innovators who can campaign for an idea create demand amongst those who might benefit from it or help support it. Being willing to experiment with an idea is also critical. Experimentation pinpoints adaptations needed for an innovation to spread beyond specific sets of circumstances. Likewise, innovators must be ready to let their ideas grow beyond their own organisational boundaries. Most social innovations spread through copying rather than through building the social equivalent of big corporations.

    4. Which one of the following best expresses the main conclusion of the above argument?
  • 3
    1

    Explanation

    The correct answer is D.

The main conclusion is stated explicitly in the second sentence. You can tell this is the overall conclusion because the following sentences in the passage all help support what was said in the second sentence.

Many people knowingly buy fake brands because they are substantially cheaper than the genuine article would be. They may try to justify their behaviour, on the grounds that the manufacturers and retail outlets are already rich enough from ripping off the public with their exorbitant prices and paying rock-bottom wages to their employees. As true as these claims may be, it doesn’t excuse the shopper for encouraging piracy.

    5. Which one of the following illustrates the principle used in the above argument?
  • 2
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is B.

The reasoning behind the argument is that there is no excuse for wrong-doing, even if it is in response to wrong-doing elsewhere. In the argument, the initial wrong-doing was by rich retail outlets ‘ripping off the public’, and the (also wrong) response to this was by shoppers buying cheaper fake brands, which could be seen as piracy. So the correct answer to this questions must highlight where something not morally justified is carried out in response to another unjustifiable act. This is evident in B, the first wrong-doing being Jorge’s ex-girlfriend cheating on him, and the second being Jorge spreading lies about her.

In a café, Delicious Tropical drink is one-half orange juice and one-half strawberry juice. Vibrant Sunset drink is two-thirds orange juice and one-third apple juice. Stacey makes a mixture called Tasty Delight which is one-quarter Delicious Tropical and three-quarters Vibrant Sunset.

    6. What is the proportion of orange juice in Tasty Delight?
  • 5

    Explanation

    The correct answer is E.

One quarter of delicious tropical contains 1/4×1/2=1/8 orange juice. Three quarters of vibrant sunset contains 3/4×2/3=1/2 orange juice. So the total proportion of orange juice in Tasty Delight would be 1/8+1/2=1/8+4/8=5/8.

    7. How much will James have to pay (including the postage) for his cards?
  • 2

    Explanation

    The correct answer is C.

For the 8 small cards with a standard image, they would cost $3 each: 8×3=$24 in total. For the 20 medium cards with his own image, they would cost $5 each: 20×5=$100 in total. In addition, he wants personalised greetings on 5 of the cards at $2 per card: 5×2=$10. He also pays postage for all 28 cards, which would cost $1 for each group of up to 10 cards, so 3×1=$3. In total, he would therefore pay: 24+100+10+3=$137.

The following graph shows the changes in Ali’s bank balance each month over a period of 9 months. The change in balance in a given month is the difference between the balance at the end of the month and the balance at the end of the previous month.

    8. Which one of the following graphs could show the actual amount in his bank balance at the end of each month?
  • 3
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is E.

From the graph shown in the question, we can see that the change in balance in the second month is negative, which means the balance in the account must have been less at the end of the second month compared to the first month. That means the bar representing the second month should be smaller than that of the first month, so eliminate graph B because the second bar is taller than the first. The next change is balance is also negative, but its magnitude is greater than the change in balance between the previous two months, so the bar representing the balance in the 3rd month must be smaller than that of the 2nd month, but also must have a greater size difference compared to the second month than the size difference between the 1st and 2nd months. Eliminate graph A because the difference in height between the 2nd and 3rd bars is smaller than that of the 1st and 2nd bars. Also eliminate C because the difference in height between the 2nd and 3rd bars is the same as that of the 1st and 2nd bars. So now we have D and E remaining. The 4th bar on the graph given in the question shows that there is no change in balance between the 3rd and 4th months, so the height of the bars representing the account balance in the 3rd and 4th months should be the same. This is shown by graph E, which is therefore the correct answer.

    Explanation

    The correct answer is A.

The argument’s reasoning is as follows: X indicates Y, so the opposite of X must the opposite of Y, where X=a high unemployment level and Y=a weak economy.

Replacing X with ‘a tanned skin’, and Y with ‘you have been out in the sun’, shows that answer A closely parallels this reasoning.

Indian mongooses were introduced to Japan’s Amami island in 1979 to control the rat and pit viper populations. They also preyed on the tip-nosed frog, dramatically reducing their numbers. Once the mongooses were removed, the population of the frogs rebounded. A recent project found that, when approached by researchers, frogs in areas where the impact of the mongooses had been greatest would hop away faster than those in less affected areas. Since almost all of the mongooses were removed from the island five years ago, it is unlikely that the frogs observed have ever seen one, and so this cannot have been learned from contact with mongooses. The greater wariness in the frogs must have been caused by a genetic change.

    10. Which one of the following is the best statement of the flaw in the argument above?
  • 3
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is C.

The flaw in this argument will question the validity of the argument. The overall conclusion is ‘The greater wariness in the frogs must have been caused by a genetic change’, which rests upon the idea that the frog’s behaviour could not have been learned from mongooses. This implies that there are only two options for the root of the frog’s behaviour: learned from mongooses or caused by a genetic change. This mistakenly excluded the possibility of other methods by which the frogs may have learned this behaviour, and this flaw is highlighted by answer option C.

The arrival of the digital age and the communication platforms and software advances underpinning it are significant for a much older pursuit: the study of human behaviour. Revolutionary ‘big data’ now exists in the form of the internet traffic created by users of various websites and social networking services and applications. The nature of the information shared by internet users tends to differ depending on the type of site or platform concerned. Messages and other content posted on Facebook, and other social media linked to people’s ‘real’ identities, tend to be edited somewhat to present a more attractive or successful image. People’s Google searches, and usage of other sites where their ‘real’ identities can remain more concealed, reveal more accurate information about their lives.

    11. Which one of the following can be drawn as a conclusion from the above passage?
  • 1
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is B.

A cannot be drawn as a conclusion because the first sentence of the passage only states the significance of new data collection methods, but does not imply that traditional methods are not important. C is not even mentioned in the passage. Conclusion D cannot be drawn either because the final two sentences of the passage suggest that there may be differences between ‘individuals’ Facebook content and what they post on sites where they can remain hidden’, but not the extreme that there will be no similarities between them whatsoever. E similarly cannot be concluded.

Therefore the correct answer is B, which can be concluded from the penultimate sentence in the passage.

The costumes can be made in a variety of colour combinations, as shown in the following table.

The table also shows the number of dancers who will have each variety of costume.

Each costume can be made from exactly 2 m of material. The material comes in 30 m rolls and Meg buys one roll in each of red, yellow, green and blue.

    12. How much blue material will be left over?
  • 3
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is B.

The 4 100% blue costumes will require 4×2=8m of blue material. The 2 half-red, half-blue costumes will require 2x2x0.50=2m of blue material. The two half-blue, half-yellow costumes will also require 2m of blue material. The 2 50% green, 25% red and 25% blue costumes will require 2x2x0.25=1m of blue material. The 10 60% red, 20% yellow and 20% blue costumes will require 10x2x0.20=4m of blue material.

So in total, 8+2+2+1+4=17m of blue material would be required, so when using a 30m roll, 30-17=13m would be left.

Tom has a maximum budget of €3600. All three travellers will qualify for the quoted cost per person, but Tom will also have to pay the additional single supplement.

They will need direct flights. They will want fully escorted travel and inclusive day tours.

    13. Which company should Tom choose for the holiday?
  • 2
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is D.

They need direct flights, so eliminate Alltravel because there is 1 change. They want fully escorted travel, so eliminate Ecotravel because its travel is only partly escorted. So their remaining options are Beyond, Cosmic and Discreet. Which would cost:

    Beyond- (1200×3)+(10×7)=3670, which is over Tom’s budget so can be eliminated;

    Cosmic- (1150×3)+(30×7)=3660, which is also over Tom’s budget;

Discreet- (1100×3)+(40×7)=3580, which is the only option meeting all the criteria within Tom’s budget, so must be the correct answer.

An early form of electronic communication is Morse code, which is used with a series of dots and dashes to send a message. The code is shown below, with dots and dashes indicating each letter of the alphabet.

To make it easier to learn Morse code a different display was configured and part of this display is shown below. Beginning from the START point, the letter ‘A’ would be determined by one right move which is a DOT, and one left move, which is a DASH. So A is a DOT DASH.

Some of the circles in the display above have been labelled with the wrong letter.

    14. How many circles have been incorrectly labelled?
  • 2
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is C.

T is a line and E is a dot, so the circles with T and E are correct. Circle M is also correct as M is two dashes, so two moves to the left. Q is dash, dash, dot, dash, so should be left, left, right, left; however, the circle labelled Q is after 3 moves to the left, so this circle has been incorrectly labelled.

Using the same method to check the remaining circles have been labelled correctly:

G= dash, dash, dot= left, left, right; so has been correctly labelled

W= dot, dash, dash= right, left, left; so W has been incorrectly labelled because the first move should have been to the right

K= dash, dot, dash= left, right, left; correct

D= dash, dot, dot= left, right, right; correct

A= dot, dash= right, left; correct

N= dash, dot= left, right; incorrect (initially goes right instead of left in the diagram)

R= dot, dash, dot= right, left, right; correct

I= dot, dot= right, right; correct

U= dot, dot, dash= right, right, left= correct

S= dot, dot, dot= right, right, right= correct.

Therefore, the incorrect circles are labelled Q, W and N; so 3 circles have been incorrectly labelled.

People who give money to charity tend to choose the large, well-known ones, but there are many reasons why that is a mistake. Small charities are usually the vision of one dedicated individual and have a specific focus. Because administrative costs are low, nearly all of the money donated is used for the object of the charity. But that all changes when charities become big. In order to become a household name, these charities spend a lot of money on advertising and employing fundraisers. Furthermore, to attract talented senior staff, the largest charities offer salaries which are intended to compete with profit-making companies.

    15. Which one of the following is an underlying assumption of the above argument?
  • 2
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is A.

The argument is that it may be a mistake to donate money to large, well-known charities opposed to smaller ones, because larger charities spend less money directly for the object of the charity. For this argument to be valid, it must be assumed that the intention is for the greatest possible proportion of money donated to a charity to be used for the object of the charity, rather than for advertising, etc. Therefore A is the assumption, without which the argument would not be valid.

Newspapers and magazines preach endlessly about a need for everyone else to take urgent action on climate, whilst simultaneously promoting, and profiting from, flying. Travel promotion takes up vast space in the media, whilst the income from flight advertising pays a significant portion of many journalists’ salaries. Journalists thus enjoy personal gain from the promotion of a fossil fuel-dependent industry, which also widely influences the holiday decisions of the general public. Not only does this practice reek of hypocrisy, but it also undermines the effort to reduce global warming to internationally agreed levels. Each plane passenger is likely to generate the equivalent of an entire household’s annual carbon footprint every time they fly, according to figures released by campaign group Flight Free.

Recent research suggests that antiretroviral drugs designed to prevent HIV-positive individuals developing AIDS also have an effect on multiple sclerosis (MS). A study of 21 000 HIV-positive individuals treated at English hospitals between 1999 and 2011 found that they were 62% less likely to develop MS compared to non-HIV-positive individuals. One explanation for this could be that HIV infection actually combats the onset of MS in some way. However, some theories on the development of MS suggest that it has its origins in a viral infection.

    17. Which one of the following can be drawn as a conclusion from the above passage?
  • 1
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is A.

Conclusion A can be drawn from the first sentence of the passage.

The proportion of HIV patients who receive antiretroviral drugs is not mentioned in the passage, so B cannot be concluded.

The first sentence of the passage suggests that the drugs may help prevent the development of MS, not that they can be used to treat MS after an individual has already developed it, so C cannot be concluded.

The passage does not refer to the effect of antiretroviral drugs on viral infections themselves, but instead focuses on MS, so D is not the answer either.

The passage actually suggests a potential benefit of taking antiretroviral drugs for those at risk of developing MS, whereas e suggests the opposite, so E cannot be concluded.

A banana costs 20p, a nectarine 30p and a mango 45p. I spend exactly £1.50 on some or all of these fruits.

    18. Which one of the following statements is incorrect?
  • 3
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is D.

There is no combination including at least one of each type of fruit that totals to £1.50, so A is correct.

Buying 4 bananas would cost 0.20×4=£0.80, which would still leave enough money to buy at least one other type of fruit, so B is also correct.

Buying 3 mangoes would cost 0.45×3=£1.35, which would leave 1.50-1.35=£0.15, which is not enough to buy 1 of either a banana or a nectarine, so C is also correct.

To buy the maximum number of items, we need the cheapest possible combination, and we need at least 2 different types of fruit. So to spend the minimum amount we would buy 1 nectarine at £0.30, and then use the rest for bananas at £0.20 each. 1.50-0.30=£1.20, 1.20/0.20=6, so we could buy 1 nectarine and 6 bananas, 7 fruits in total. So E is also correct.

Hence D is incorrect, because the £1.50 could be spent on buying 2 mangoes and 2 nectarines, so four pieces of fruit in total.

    20. If this structure is rolled like a dice and lands on the surface of a table, which one of the following options is not a possible view of the structure as viewed from above?
  • 0
    1

    Explanation

    The correct answer is B.

B is not a possible view because in B the black sphere is in the centre. If the leftmost sphere in the diagram given in the question was represented by the sphere in the centre in diagram B, this sphere would be connected to 1 grey and 2 black rods. But the central sphere in B is connected to 3 black rods, so this cannot be correct. Similarly, if the rightmost sphere in the diagram in the question was represented by the sphere in the centre in diagram B, it would also be connected to 1 grey and 2 black rods, so this cannot be true either. As there are only two black spheres, diagram B cannot be a possible view of the structure.

Positive discrimination, known as affirmative action in the US, is the process of increasing the number of employees from under-represented groups in workplaces from which they have been excluded, by preferentially selecting recruits from those categories. Although many countries, including the US, allow the practice of positive discrimination, it remains illegal in the UK under the Equality Act 2010, and so it should. Positive discrimination serves not only to lessen the sense of achievement for those who belong to the relevant minority, but also to foster resentment amongst those who do not. You can use the 'therefore' rule to get to the main conclusion. If you link each of the four incorrect statements to the correct statements by placing the incorrect first, then 'therefore', and then the correct statement, it flows smoothly and makes sense, but if you were to reverse it and state the correct statement 'therefore' incorrect statement, it wouldn't make sense. That's how you uncover the overall conclusion.

A belief is a thought about how things are – about what really is or is not the case. For instance, someone who believes in God believes that a being such as God actually exists. Assuming that people would prefer to have true beliefs rather than false ones, then they need to find a way to determine which is which. Unfortunately, people have a tendency to want to ‘protect’ their existing beliefs by only seeking evidence that supports them and being blind to contrary evidence. This makes for a very poor test of whether a given belief is indeed true. Actively seeking the evidence that goes against your own beliefs allows you to make a proper assessment, and consequently a far more reliable judgment.

    22. Which one of the following can be drawn as a conclusion from the above passage?
  • 0
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is A.

Belief in God is used as an example and is not compared to atheism, so B cannot be concluded.

C is not a conclusion, but an assumption, and this is stated explicitly in the 3rd sentence of the passage.

The passage implies that those who feel certain about their believes are unlikely to give a fair test as to whether their beliefs are true or not, but does not indicate that this makes their beliefs more likely to be false, just that they are less likely to be revealed as false if they are. So D is not a conclusion that can be drawn either.

E is far too extreme to be true, as it suggests there is no possibility of changing one’s mind after they accept their belief as true.

Hence A is the only conclusion that can be drawn from the passage, and is supported by the 4th and 5th sentences.

A small factory produces four types of cycle: bicycles (two-wheeled), tricycles (three-wheeled), tandems (two-wheeled for two riders) and unicycles (one-wheeled without handlebars). The number of essential components required for each product is shown in the table below.

We know that yesterday 10 saddles, 14 wheels and 9 handlebars were used and 7 cycles were built in total.

    24. How many tricycles were built?
  • 1
    3

    Explanation

    The correct answer is B.

Let b, t, u and a be the number of bicycles, tricycles, unicycles and tandems that were built respectively.

There were 7 cycles built in total: b+t+u+a=7

10 saddles were built, and each cycle requires 1 saddle except tandems which require 2 per cycle: b+t+u+2a=10.

Subtracting the first equation from the second gives a=3.

We can now simplify these two equations:

    b+t+u+3=7                    b+t+u+2(3)=10

    b+t+u=4                         b+t+u=4

    9 handlebars were used: b+t+2(3)=9

    b+t=3

Subtracting this equation from the previous equation give u=1.

    14 wheels were used: 2b+3t+u+2a=14

    2b+3t+1+2(3)=14

    2b+3t=7.

Solving the pair of simultaneous equations b+t=3 and 2b+3t=7:

    (b+t=3)x2=(2b+2t=6)

    (2b+3t=7)-(2b+2t=6)

    t=1.

Therefore only 1 tricycle was built.

    whatttt

    I want to buy a brochure which costs 49p. I have a pocket full of small change and so want to use as many coins as possible. I have 8 x 1p coins, 5 x 2p coins, 5 x 5p coins, 3 x 10p coins and 1 x 50p coin.

    25. What is the largest number of coins I can use and pay the exact price?
  • 2
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is D.

To use the largest number of coins to make 49p we must use the coins which individually have the smallest values. Using up all of the 1, 2 and 5p coins would give (1×8)+(5×2)+(5×5)=43p, using 8+5+5=18 coins in total. The next smallest value coin is 10p, which if added to the existing total would make 53p, exceeding 49p by 53-49=4p. So we must have to use one 10p and fewer of the smaller value coins. Using trial by error, we will find that the correct combination of coins is 8x1p, 3x2p, 5x5p and 1x10p, which is 8+3+5+1=17 coins in total.

The diagrams below relate to a recent referendum in Bolandia about whether the country should remain a member of, or leave, the Continental Union.

Two-thirds of those eligible to vote did so.

    26. What proportion of the total population voted for leaving the Continental Union?
  • 0
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is A.

80% of the total population were eligible to vote, and 2/3rds of these did vote, which would mean 0.80×2/3=4/5×2/3=8/15ths of the total population voted. Of the 8/15ths of the population that voted, 60% voted leave, which would be 8/15×0.60=8/15×3/5=8/25=32%.

US health authorities have linked at least 18 deaths and more than 1000 cases of a mysterious lung illness with vaping (an alternative to smoking in which users inhale an aerosol, or vapour). The symptoms include chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath, and while doctors have not been able to establish what is causing the illness (and it has not been linked to any particular product), vaping oils containing THC appear to pose a greater risk. However, if the level of risk is not well understood by doctors, people should – for the moment – still have the right to make their own choice. The government should not impose a ban on vaping until more research has been completed.

    27. Which one of the following best illustrates the principle underlying the argument above?
  • 0
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is B.

The principle underlying the argument is that because the risks associated with vaping are not yet fully understood, the government should not impose a ban on vaping until more research has been completed.

Only answer B parallels this reasoning: because the dangers involved on trips into space are not fully known, planned trips into space should not be cancelled until these dangers have been fully investigated.

Two identical rectangular pieces of paper are arranged to overlap each other by 5 cm. One of the rectangles has been folded to make the structure below (not to scale). The length of the whole arrangement is 75 cm.

    28. What is the length of one of the pieces of paper?
  • 1
    1

    Explanation

    The correct answer is C.

Let the length of one of the pieces of paper be x. If the two pieces of paper were laid adjacent to one another so they did not overlap, their combined length would be 2x. As in the diagram they are overlapped by 5cm, this takes 5cm off the total length of the arrangement, so the length of the structure would be 2x-5. In the diagram two 3cm length sections in the rectangle on the right side have been folded upward, so they no longer contribute to the length of the whole arrangement, so the length of the whole arrangement is 2x-5-2(3) =2x-5-6 =2x-11. The questions states that this is equal to 75cm, so we can solve the equation: 2x-11=75

    2x=86

    x=43

So the length of one of the pieces of paper is 43cm.

the diagram shows two measurements of 3cm that have been folded up however the calculation dosent account for the extra 3 cm that is folded up on the opposite side, making the total length of the folded paper 9cm.

Silk gets stronger when supercooled whilst other materials get weak and brittle. The discovery was made by a group of scientists shooting bullets at various supercooled items and filming them shatter. When they tried it on a spider web it didn’t work: the web just caught the bullet.

At the time it was just an interesting curiosity, but plainly it has enormous practical significance. By studying how the spider makes its silk we can learn how to make polymers (plastics) that don’t get brittle in the deep freezer, or in outer space, or in the Arctic. Moreover, natural silk can itself be used to manufacture objects for use in extreme conditions. The half-million tonnes already produced annually is almost certain to increase dramatically.

    29. Which of the following is the best expression of the main conclusion of the above argument?
  • 3
    3

    Explanation

    The correct answer is C.

The 1st and 3rd sentences of the passage combined express the main conclusion, which is C.

A is true but supports the conclusion that this discovery is significant, so is not the conclusion.

B is also factually correct but is stated in the 3rd sentence to emphasise the importance of the discovery of silk’s curious property.

D and E, again, are used to support conclusion C by giving examples of the uses and impact of this discovery.

A paint company uses two different coding systems to define the colours used in its paints. One code is the ‘YMC’ code, in which numbers between 0 and 63 are used to represent the proportions of yellow, magenta and cyan in the colour. The other is the ‘OCT’ code, which contains 6 numerical digits.

The table shows the YMC configurations and the OCT code for a number of the paints in its range:

A customer wants a gold-coloured paint mixing, which he knows to have a YMC configuration of 50 yellow, 41 cyan and 34 magenta.

    30. What is the OCT code of this gold colour?
  • 2
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is C.

The YMC code is translated into the OTC code in the reverse order. We can see this because ‘0’ for Y, M or C is coverted into ‘00’ for the OTC code, but is at the beginning of the OTC code for C and at the end of the OTC code for Y.

A Y, M or C code of 50 translates to an OTC code of 61 (shown by ‘M’ for luscious pink). Similarly, a code of 41 translated into 50 (shown by ‘M’ for orange squeeze). A code of 34 translates into 39 (shown by ‘Y’ for luscious pink).

Therefore the codes would be translated as follows:

    Yellow 50à61

    Magenta 34à39

    Cyan 41à50

Which would be written as an OTC code in the reverse order as 503961.

Obesity has increased greatly in recent years in the UK. Some commentators have attributed this to people becoming greedier in a consumer society; however, obese people should not be blamed for their condition when it is the food environment in Europe that has changed. Obesity results from a combination of genetic factors and a fast-food culture that provides an easy supply of cheap, sugary and processed snacks and meals that are high in calories. This is compounded by the shift to more sedentary lifestyles both at work and in leisure time, which has led to a lack of exercise.

    31. Which one of the following, if true, would most weaken the above argument?
  • 0
    0

    Explanation

    The correct answer is C.

The conclusion for this argument is: ‘obese people should not be

blamed for their condition when it is the food environment in Europe that has changed’.

A has little impact on the strength of this argument because it does not point the blame for obesity on neither obese people nor the food environment in Europe.

B may weaken the argument slightly, by implying that consuming high-calorie foods is a choice which may be made by obese people, but it is very vague because it does not indicate the relative quantity, cost or availability of high-calorie foods compared to lower-calorie foods. Therefore B also has little effect on the argument.

D does not weaken the argument because it does not point the blame back on obese people.

E, like D, also point the blame elsewhere, so does not have much impact on the argument.

C, however, does weaken the argument. If the food environment was to blame for the incidence of obesity in the UK, a similar incidence of obesity should be seen across all of Europe, as the food environment would be similar. But if obesity levels are actually higher in the UK compared to elsewhere in Europe, that suggests that the European food environment is not responsible for obesity in the UK, which goes directly against and hence weakens the argument.
