With a unique blend of academic excellence, clinical precision, and a compassionate teaching approach, I bring a holistic and personalised touch to 1:1 tutoring. Iโm Agnes, a dedicated private tutor and current dental surgery student at the University of Leeds. Over the past few years, Iโve worked with students across KS1 to A-Level, providing tailored support in subjects ranging from sciences and mathematics to psychology and literature. My background in clinical dental technology and my hands-on experience with children and young people โ particularly those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) โ has deeply shaped the way I approach education: person-centred, adaptive, and always built on trust.
My journey into tutoring was driven by more than just academic passion. It came from a desire to truly connect with students โ especially those who feel left behind or overlooked in mainstream education. Through platforms such as TutorIn, MyTutor, Elephant Connect, and Preply, Iโve supported pupils with diverse needs, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, and behavioural challenges. Iโve seen firsthand how the right support, delivered with empathy and consistency, can turn disengagement into confidence and anxiety into progress.
I believe that learning should never be a source of fear or shame. Thatโs why I always strive to meet students on their level โ emotionally and intellectually. Whether itโs through humour, active listening, or simply offering a safe space where they know theyโll never be judged, I create an environment that encourages openness and growth. For some students, this has meant starting with just 10-minute sessions and gradually building up their capacity and confidence until theyโre comfortably completing full hour-long lessons. Others benefit from small, consistent steps paired with plenty of positive reinforcement. I see it as my role not just to teach content, but to help rebuild their relationship with learning itself.
My academic background provides a strong foundation for the subjects I tutor. I hold a First Class Honours degree in Clinical Dental Technology from the University of Central Lancashire, where I also completed a Medical Sciences Foundation year. Prior to this, I achieved high grades in a wide range of GCSE and A-Level subjects, with top marks in Psychology, Chemistry, and English Literature. These studies have not only sharpened my subject knowledge but also taught me the importance of clear communication, structured thinking, and a solution-focused mindset โ all of which I bring into my teaching.
Alongside tutoring, Iโve gained valuable experience working directly with patients and in team-based clinical settings. Roles such as clinical assistant, receptionist, and secretary for BDSA Sports Day have helped me develop the ability to multitask, stay organised, and communicate clearly โ especially under pressure. These skills have translated seamlessly into my work as a tutor, where I must often adapt quickly, manage varying learning styles, and work closely with parents, carers, and sometimes schools to ensure weโre all working together for the studentโs benefit.
Safeguarding is at the heart of what I do. I am fully DBS checked and take my responsibility for student safety incredibly seriously. I am constantly alert to the signs that a child may be struggling โ emotionally, mentally, or physically โ and know how to report concerns through the appropriate channels while maintaining a calm and supportive presence for the student. For me, safeguarding isnโt just about ticking boxes. Itโs about building an environment where students feel safe enough to take risks, make mistakes, and ultimately, thrive.
One of the most rewarding parts of tutoring is watching a student go from saying โI canโtโ to โIโll try.โ Itโs in those quiet moments of progress โ answering a question without prompting, sitting through a full lesson, or asking for homework because theyโre starting to enjoy learning again โ that Iโm reminded why I do this. Every student has their own story, and I take pride in adapting my approach to suit their needs, interests, and pace. I work hard to gain their trust, to earn their respect, and to help them see what theyโre capable of โ not just academically, but beyond the lesson too.
Outside of tutoring, Iโm also an artist and passionate about creativity in all forms โ something I often incorporate into lessons when it helps engage or relax students. Whether itโs using visual methods to explain a science topic or creative writing exercises in English, I believe in making learning dynamic and memorable.
Looking forward, Iโm excited to continue developing both professionally and personally as an educator. Iโm always seeking new training opportunities and strategies that can help me become a more effective tutor, especially in the area of SEND support. My ultimate goal is to keep making a difference โ one student, one lesson, one breakthrough at a time.
My teaching style is student-centred, adaptive, and empathetic. I focus on creating a safe, non-judgmental space where students feel understood and confident to engage at their own pace. I tailor every lesson to suit individual needs, using humour, encouragement, and step-by-step guidance to build trust and motivation. Whether a student needs short sessions, frequent breaks, or subject-specific scaffolding, I remain flexible and responsive. My approach combines academic structure with emotional support, aiming not only to improve grades but also to rebuild the studentโs relationship with learning.
Yes, I have extensive experience in teaching and tutoring across various levels and subjects. Since 2021, Iโve worked as a private tutor with platforms including MyTutor, Preply, Elephant Connect, and TutorIn. Iโve taught students from KS1 to A-Level in subjects such as Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, English Literature, and Polish.
Importantly, I have significant experience working with students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. I tailor my sessions to meet each studentโs individual learning style, often starting with short lessons and gradually building engagement and confidence. My approach focuses on patience, empathy, and building a strong rapport with each student to create a safe, productive learning environment.
One of my proudest achievements is earning a First Class Honours degree in Clinical Dental Technology, which reflects the dedication, focus, and resilience I put into my studies โ especially while balancing academic and practical clinical work.
Another achievement Iโm proud of is the positive impact Iโve made as a tutor, particularly with students who have SEND. Iโve helped students who were disengaged, anxious, or had little confidence in themselves slowly rebuild their motivation and see real academic progress. Seeing a student go from avoiding lessons to asking insightful questions and celebrating their own wins is incredibly rewarding.
Iโm also proud of completing the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, which pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me leadership, perseverance, and the importance of teamwork โ skills I carry into every lesson I teach.
Finally, Iโd say Iโm proud of how I continue to grow โ both personally and professionally โ by always seeking to learn more, adapt to new challenges, and stay committed to supporting young people in any way I can.
