About
Acibadem University was founded in 2007 in the capital of Turkey, Istanbul. The Acibadem University is dedicated to the teaching of health subjects alone and has five faculties, each for a different area of healthcare. The school of medicine is the faculty which offers a medicine programme taught in the English language.
Acibadem strives to deliver education which is research focused. The university, therefore, invests heavily in keeping laboratory and medical equipment up to date and current. This means that students will have access to highly advanced, modern technologies when training. This enhances learning and gives students an advantage as they have experience with these intricate technologies.
The university houses a Centre of Advanced Simulation and Education (CASE). This centre contains equipment for clinical simulation, as well as advanced endoscopic and robotic surgery training. This centre allows students to practise their skills and clinical decision making in a safe environment. It also allows students to practise skills which are currently just emerging in mainstream medicine, giving them an advantage when they graduate. CASE provides students the opportunity to develop skills in disciplines such as laparoscopy, robotic surgery, and dissection training.
Medical Programmes Offered
Acibadem University offers a medicine programme taught in English over six years.
The six years is split into three phases:
- Phase 1: Students get comprehensive training in the theoretical aspects of medicine. This will include biology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, chemistry, ethics and legalities.
- Phase 2 : The students start their clinical internships, developing their clinical knowledge and experience.
- Phase 3 : Students have further internships and experience different specialities. They will also sit their final exam.
Acibadem University is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and is recognised by the World Health Organisation. It is also recognised by the General Medical Council.
Graduates of this programme leave with a qualification which can be used in the UK and Ireland. Graduates will also have the right to apply for residency in the US, Canada, Australia and worldwide.

Admissions Requirements
There is no entrance exam for studying at Acibadem University. Applicants will need to provide proof they have proficiency in the English language or sit an English test.
Admission is decided purely on the scores an individual gains in their high school diploma level of education. UK applicants must have at least two A-levels at grade C or above.
A high school diploma can also be accepted with a score of at least 90/100.
Student Life
Istanbul is a vibrant city which has been the cultural and historical centre of both the Roman and Ottoman Empires. Today it has 12 million inhabitants, meaning it is still a lively hub of activity. The city is incredibly vast and stretches between two continents. Due to its unique geography and its size, Istanbul gets vastly different weather between the east and west sides. However, its trademark morning fog hangs over both sides giving natural stunning sights in the morning.
The European side of the city contains the Fatih District, a sprawling area which is the oldest district in the city. It is often considered the centre of the city and contains within it the history of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empire. Landmarks such as the Topkapi Palace, the Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar are stunning places to visit and get a feel for this city and its culture. The Asian region of Istanbul offers natural delights, with stunning seaside communities and beautifully peaceful green areas of the Anatolian region.
Students can marvel at the culture and history of Istanbul in its many museums, mosques, monuments, palaces and churches. Istanbul can offer students vibrancy and opportunities for cultural immersion in its bazaars, bars and restaurants. Equally, students can get away from the bustling streets and instead enjoy its parks and green spaces.
Extracurricular Activities
Students will have the opportunity to be part of many research projects and programmes. Those in their final years of their programmes may also lead research initiatives. This gives students the opportunity to display and showcase their initiative and ideas.
Acibadem University hosts a plethora of events both internationally and nationally. These may include seminars, conferences and guest lectures. This gives students the opportunity to learn about new and emerging topics in medicine and discuss the issues in the field.
There are over 40 social clubs to join at Acibadem University. Some have a scientific focus such as the criminology club or the scientific research society, giving students the opportunity to network and socialise with those who are like-minded. Equally, some clubs are more hobby focused and can help students discover and develop new skills outside of academia.
The University offers its student access to the University Sports Centre, including indoor and outdoor facilities. Like its academic equipment, the facilities in the sports centre are all modern and state of the art. The centre also offers physical programmes and classes from qualified instructors.
Accommodation
The university does offer dormitory accommodation. The dormitories are divided into males and females. The female dorms have a capacity of 260 beds in 3-4 bedroom rooms. The male dorms have 144 beds in 72 double occupancy rooms. Each room is fully furnished and comes with air conditioning, TV and internet access.
Fees for the accommodation includes breakfast on each weekday in the cafeteria, cleaning services by facility management and 24/7 laundromats.
As beds are limited in the dorms, some may consider living in privately rented accommodation. A one-bedroom apartment in Istanbul is often around €200 to €350 per month. In addition living expenses are around €400 per month.
