About

Trakia University, also known as Thrace University, it is located in the city Stara Zagora. Trakia University was founded in 1982, and currently teaches around 600 Bulgarian and international medical students. Its relatively small medical student body means that teaching can be more individualised and no student gets lost in the mix.

The university is dedicated to providing graduates with a strong theoretical and practical skills base to begin their careers with confidence. It uses mixed teaching methods such as lectures, seminars and smaller group sessions to ensure students get the best learning experience for them. 

A medical degree from Trakia University is recognised in all European Union states and in the whole European Economic Area. The degree is also recognised by the General Medical Council and the World Health Organisation. This allows graduates to continue their careers over the globe.

The large campus is located on the Eastern end of Stara Zagora. The campus has a peaceful feeling of seclusion as it is surrounded by greenery and forests.  The campus also hosts several museums including a museum of Equestrian Sport, The Museum of Agrarian Education and the Museum of Veterinary Medicine.

Medical Programmes Offered

The university currently an English language Veterinary Medicine course which is taught over five and a half years.

  • In years 1-3 students focus on developing their pre-clinical knowledge. Year 3 has a mandatory summer school.
  • After year 3 the course becomes focused on developing clinical practice and decision making, at the end of year 4 there is a clinical summer internship.
  • During the fifth year students begin species-orientated training, giving them a chance to gain practical experience in mobile clinics. 
  • In their final year, students must complete an internship programme and pass state exams.

Once the course is completed successfully, graduates will be awarded a masters degree and become a qualified veterinarian.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must have achieved a high school diploma level education with passing grades in biology and chemistry, one at an A2 level. 

To be accepted into the Trakia University hopefuls must complete a three part entrance exam:

  • Those who are not native English speakers need to complete a English language exam.
  • A biology exam (in English)
  • A chemistry exam (in English)

There are early and late exam sessions available, depending on when individual’s receive their high school diploma level results.

    Extracurricular Activities

    Stara Zagora is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria, with over 2,500 years of history. Almost 150 years ago the city was totally destroyed by war and has since been rebuilt completely. The newly built city only has straight roads and is known as The City of Straight Streets. Linden trees line nearly every street and the locals hold events from May to mid-June while the trees blossom. 

    Stara Zagora also boasts the biggest opera house in the Balkans, and has an annual festival of opera and Ballet. There is also a theatre and many art galleries that make this city jam-packed with culture. The highly landscaped and beautiful Ayazmoto park is a tranquil and green haven where people can enjoy nature. The park also houses a zoo, an observatory and a botanical garden.

    Those who enjoy history will find a wealth of ruins from ancient civilisations, such as the Roman, Ottoman and Thracian Empires. For those who enjoy a more social scene Stara Zagora is host to many local bars, restaurants and nightclubs. 

    Trakia University itself invests heavily on the wider learning and development of their students. The university is often included in many national and international research programmes. The university also organises annual seminars and conferences for medical students to further their knowledge and network. 

    Students also have access to the universities indoor and outdoor sports facilities for general fitness and athletics and team sports such as football, basketball, volleyball and tennis. 

    Finally, and rather uniquely, Trakia University owns a holiday centre by the coastal holiday town of Obzor. For students to enjoy a weekend by the sea and come away from academia for a break.

    Student Accommodation

    There is basic student accommodation available on the campus of Trakia University. The cost of this accommodation is around €30-€40 a month. Accommodation must be applied for and can be difficult to get into.

    The overall cost of living in Stara Zagora is very cheap, and many students prefer to rent privately. A privately rented apartment usually costs between €190-€250 a month. The cost of public transport is incredibly cheap, therefore, living further from campus is still an affordable option. 

    Overall students may expect the cost of living to be around €400 a month.
