Varna Medical University (VMU) is located in the third largest city in Bulgaria, it was founded in 1961. It has become renowned as one of the best medical universities in Europe, attracting students from over 45 countries.

Medical Programmes Offered
VMU offers courses in both English and Bulgarian. Medicine programmes in English include a Dental Medicine Programme taught over six years.
The ourse aims to develop the student’s understanding of the theoretical, practical and professional knowledge needed to become a dentist.
The earlier years of the course focuses on building a foundation of anatomical and biological knowledge. With the later years expanding that knowledge out into clinical practice, applying it to working interpersonally and professionally.
The dentistry course has mandatory summer internships in years 2-4 and finishes with a six-month internship before graduating.
Once graduated from the dentistry programme, the graduate receives their masters in dentistry and can practice anywhere in the world.
VMU does not offer a graduate entry dentistry course, and student transfers are also not accepted. They do offer accelerated dental courses if the student fits the requirements; individuals should contact the university directly to discuss their options.
Admission Requirements
Applicants to VMU must hold good grades in high school diploma level chemistry and biology.
There is a science based entrance test for the dentistry programme and an English proficiency test for those who are non-native English speakers.
The entrance exam asks questions about biology and chemistry. It can be completed online and consists of five sections:
- Multiple-choice questions
- Filling in the appropriate missing words in a text
- Matching words from two columns
- True or false questions
- Definitions of certain biological and medical terminology
Student Life
Varna is a hotspot for both tourism and culture and can be enjoyed easily as it is incredibly safe. Varna itself offers historical heritage from ancient Greek, Roman, Thracian and Ottoman periods. Equally, Varna is famous for its sand beaches where sports such as wind surfing and paragliding can be enjoyed.
Extracurricular Activities
Because of this diversity in cultural, historical and leisure activities, Varna itself can offer students a vast array of extracurricular activities.
The ocean side clubs and bars offer live music, large concerts and local festivals. Varna gives students a vast choice of cultural events from art, ballet, opera and theatre festivals of which there are over 20 annually.
The beautiful Sea Garden is the largest city park in the Balkans. A marvel of modern landscaping and architecture, it contains an open-air theatre, a zoo, an aquarium and multiple museums.
With such a lively environment attracting over 37,000 students there are plenty of opportunities to socialise and network with like-minded people.
The VMU offers international students an orientation week with planned events and activities to network and make new friends. Throughout the academic year, guest professor lectures, conferences, panels and medical symposiums offer an array of extra educational material.
The university also offers extracurricular clubs and sports. With social societies for the medical, dental and pharmaceutical students. These societies organise social events and increase networking opportunities for students outside of academia.
Sports teams include football, basketball and swimming. The sailing club is particularly successful and has won many trophies at local competitions.
Student Accommodation
VMU offers two student hostels with a combined 750 beds. For international students, rent is about €50 a month. This rental rate does not include electricity bills and living costs.
Many students opt for more convenient private accommodation, which is usually closer to the university and has more privacy. Depending on distance from the city centre rent of an apartment is usually €150-€300 per month. Living costs can generally be kept low and on average bills, food and leisure costs around €400 per month.
