University of Bristol (Gateway to Dentistry)

Overview

The University of Bristol Dental School educates the next generation of dentists through experience in clinical and primary care dentistry. Moving to a new Dental School premises in 2022, the curriculum has been designed with the latest advances in dental education in mind. The five-year degree takes an integrated approach and immerses students in the clinical world of dentistry alongside academic studies of the clinical sciences underpinning dental practice.

The programme is spiral, or helical, in nature – meaning topics are revisited as students progress so that core topics are built upon in complexity as you become more confident and familiar in basic theory. You begin practicing skills under supervision and in simulation but are soon ready to treat patients upon graduation.

The Gateway to Dentistry course is designed for students with the potential to become dentists but who do not meet the minimum academic criteria to apply to the five-year BDS course. During the Gateway year students learn alongside other medical and veterinary students to solidify the core sciences required for progression to a clinical degree. Successful completion of the year guarantees progression to BDS Dentistry.

Please note that applicants to the Gateway to Dentistry course must meet specific widening participation criteria.
