Hello everyone! I’m Ailish, and I’m thrilled to be starting my first year in Graduate Medicine at Queen Mary University London this September. I graduated with first-class honours in Biological Sciences from Durham University, where I also completed a placement year as part of my 4-year degree in a biotherapeutics lab. Although I enjoyed my time there, I realised my true passion lay in using my scientific knowledge to help patients directly rather than focusing on drug discovery.
During my final year, I applied for graduate medicine, so the application process is still very fresh in my mind. I understand how challenging and daunting it can be, and I’m here to help you navigate it successfully.
Having a strong medicine application is all about being a well-rounded individual and showcasing your unique skills and experiences. For my Graduate Medicine application, I gained various types of work experience in hospitals and general practice, which provided valuable insights and reflections for my personal statement. I can help you find the right work experience opportunities and guide you on how to discuss your experiences effectively in your application.
Additionally, I’m an enthusiastic sportswoman, and I used my commitment to sports to demonstrate my teamwork and dedication in my application. I’ll share tips on how to highlight your extracurricular activities to make your application stand out.
Let’s embark on this exciting journey together, and I’ll support you every step of the way to achieve your goal of getting into medical school!
As a visual learner myself, I believe in the importance of engaging, hands-on learning experiences. I adapt my teaching methods to suit each student’s unique learning style, ensuring that they are both effective and enjoyable. Together, we’ll find the teaching style that works best for you.
During my time at Durham University, I was a member of Biology Society where my role as Placement Officer was to support students with placement applications and future career prospects. As part of this I organised workshops focusing on the graduate medicine application process, sharing my own experiences and insights. These workshops covered aspects such as personal statement writing, interview types, and preparation for the UCAT entrance exam. I also have previous experience as an A-level tutor in Biology, Maths, and Geography, enabling me to effectively communicate complex concepts and foster a supportive learning environment. I focus on tailoring my tutoring to the needs of each learner, identifying specific areas they wish to improve upon, and develop customised lesson plans to address these gaps. This personalised approach ensures that students not only gain a solid understanding of the material but also feel confident and prepared for their academic challenges.
One of my proudest achievements was graduating with first-class honours in Biological Sciences from Durham University. This accomplishment was a testament to my dedication and hard work. Building on this success, gaining a place at Queen Mary University for Graduate Medicine was another significant milestone. Knowing that this had been my goal throughout my undergraduate years made the achievement even more meaningful and reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a career in medicine
