Hi!
My name is Joycelyn and I am currently a fourth year Veterinary Medicine student at the Royal Veterinary College in London. I grew up loving animals and surrounded by dogs, and after I lost my German Shepherd due to a lack of surgeons available, I decided I wanted be able to make a difference and a lasting impact for animals in the future (hence why I decided I wanted to become a vet!). I grew up in a multinational, and multilingual community, having attended a British International School, so all my life I have interacted with people from different backgrounds! I am also trilingual, multicultural (having come from three different nationalities) and grew up taking parts in all sorts of extra-curricular activities such as sports and orchestra. I highly value the importance of a good work/ life balance, so outside of Vet School and studying, I enjoy playing touch rugby, the gym, cooking, trying new cuisines, and playing the flute.
Whilst academia is important, social skills and who you are as a person is equally as important. I aim to bring out academic strengths, whilst teaching how to stand out as an individual. During interviews everyone at that point has already got the grades and we know everyone is smart! But what interviewers want to know is what makes you different from everyone else in the room, and how can this best be conveyed to someone who don’t know you at all? This is what I aim to bring out in those I tutor.
Yes- I was a student delegate at my school and one of our responsibilities were to be co-tutors for year 7 students who were new to secondary school. Every week we would attend one of their tutorials and choose a theme to present on, whilst delegating activities to keep students engaged.
After a sports injury left me in crutches for half a year and chronic arthritis, one year later I competed in two bodybuilding shows, placing as a medalist in one, and qualifying to compete in the British Finals. I believe this is a testament to my grit and discipline- that once I set my mind out to achieve something I fully commit, despite circumstance making it harder.
I have also been very proud throughout education of my high academic achievements balanced with other extracurricular activities I achieved. Often I notice that for some students, their life revolves around grades, but for me I believe that we grow the most as a person through both academia and extra-academic hobbies. For example, whilst I earned all As and A*s for my GCSEs and earned over 40 points for my International Baccalaureate Diploma, I was also captain of Varsity touch rugby in Y13, was part of Orchestra having played the flute and oboe, and was a senior delegate (one of five in our entire cohort). Even now in Vet School, studying is important to me, but I realize the importance of balancing this with other activities.
