About Me

Hi, I’m Raul!
I’m currently in fourth year at BSMS. So far I have helped students with UCAT, BMAT, IMAT, HUMAT and with their interview techniques. I have taught students from all across the world – including places like Japan, Qatar, Poland and many students from the UK.

At A-level, I did chemistry, biology and English literature which I found worked well for the essay components of the course. Getting the right balance between revising for A-levels and applying to medicine can be difficult but it is important to remember that both need focus.

I’m have just finished a BSc in Global health at the University of Manchester as a year out of medicine. As part of the course, I spent the whole of January in Mumbai completing my own research project. The course was really relaxed and it was a needed break from the intensity of medicine. I’d recommend choosing a uni course with the option to intercalate in case it’s something you might want to go for down the line.

I have loved medicine and I know the journey there is long and it can be difficult to see the end, but it is worth it. The degree is engaging and the work is manageable. It’s been some of the best years of my life and it’s a joy to watch students begin the same journey.

My teaching style

Before we first meet, I will come up with a rough plan for our lessons. In our first session, we will go through the syllabus and find areas that you find more difficult or are less confident in and adapt the lesson plan to accommodate for this. We will come up with objectives and timescales at this point to measure how much you progress.

From here we start properly. It will always be a blend of enjoyment and hard work. There will most likely be stuff for you to work on each week after each lesson and lots of random mini-quizzes at the beginning of sessions.

My past experience

Over the past few years, I have tutored over 100 students with a combination of 1 to 1 and class teaching.

I have particular experience in tutoring students for the UCATSEN examinations. (both UCATSEN25 and UCATSEN50). After I got into medical school, I found out I have both dyslexia and ADHD. At the time, I didn’t know any of this but during my own practise for the UCAT, I developed specific methods that made it a lot easier to finish each section in time. A lot of my students with similar problems have found these methods to be effective and have gone on to perform well in their own UCAT exams. This experience led to me writing some of the UCATSEN specific sections for the medic mind website.

My Proudest Achievements

Medicine is amazing and getting in (and staying in) is a huge achievement for anyone. My proudest achievements, however, come from things that have happened because of medicine. I’ve ranked in international medical essay competitions, I’ve donated my bone marrow and most of all it enabled me to get a job as a healthcare assistant during the peak of COVID. Working nights in the intensive care unit taught me so much about medicine and myself – sticking with it is easily my proudest achievement.
