Hospital Work Experience: Get Your First Practical Skills!

Many students look to do medicine work experience in a hospital due to the variety of medical professions you can observe. However, when it comes to hospital work experience, London can be highly competitive and students are advised to contact hospitals well in advance of when they want to undertake their work experience in medicine. Our 5-day medical work experience programme takes the organisation away from you so you don't need to worry!

Many hospitals and foundations offer a work experience or volunteering programme. The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust for example, offer clinical placements for up to three weeks. However, if you want to do work experience at hospitals, it is advisable to contact departments early.

Many students ask us this! When thinking about work experience, medicine has many specialties. In order to gain a good range of medical work experience, it is advisable to experience a few different settings. This could be GP surgeries, hospitals, local hospices or walk-in centres.

We believe financial income should not be a barrier so 25% of our places will be given to students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds with special bursary discounts. If you feel you may be eligible, kindly email [email protected] with the subject "Work Experience Bursary" with evidence attached.

The work experience week is non-refundable once booked. This is because we have to plan for all logistics including accommodation bookings, room bookings and more. If you are unsure whether you can attend but don't want to lose your spot, you can pay a non-refundable deposit of £500 to secure your place. The remaining payment will be due before the start of the course

We recommend this course to anyone aged 14-25. This means any child in Year 9 or above or any graduate entry applicant.

Absolutely not! 70% of our students are international and live overseas. We arrange pick up from Heathrow airport to the accomodation and one of the Medic Mind team will meet you and also drop you back to your departure terminal if needed.

Safety is paramount to our Work Experience week. Your child will always be accompanied by the Medic Mind Safeguarding team for any travel needed. There will be a 30 minute train journey to and from the accomodation to the hospitals/hospice but this will be fully accompanied.

You will be staying at UCL Accomodation in single rooms where breakfast and dinner will be provided. You will stay here from Sunday night (day before the course) until Friday morning. There is an option to extend this by another night for £160 which can be requested after booking. There is 24/7 security and Medic Mind staff who are first aid and safeguarding trained will be on site to assist. We can also arrange airport pick up for you.

Students coming to the UK for the Work Experience will need a Standard Visitor visa- https://www.gov.uk/standard-visitor

The Standard Visitor visa can only be applied for by parents/guardians and costs £100. They must apply through the UK Gov website only, You can name our course and Medic Mind as the guardians of under 18s, and provide then the course information and booking confirmation when applying for the visa.

We recommend booking flights first before applying for the visa, as the visa needs proof of a return flight (the course end date might be enough, but might result in rejection).

Yes, a lot of our students are overseas and have requirements such as being vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, halal and more. We will ensure to make the necessary adjustments to your meals.

At all times, your child will be supported by our Medic Mind staff who are DBS enhanced and have full first aid and safeguarding training. We will always have a female member of staff on-site and on our accomodation. Students will be given a 24 hour emergency number which they can contact at any time and can be passed onto parents and guardians if needed.

The work experience runs for 5 days. Each day begins at 9am and will end around 3pm, however an exact timetable will be sent to you beforehand. If you are staying with us at UCL Halls, we will arrange activities in the evening like movie night, bowling and more!

We know the current economic situation makes it difficult to pay up front. We offer interest free instalments for 3- 6 months but require a non-refundable deposit of £500.

No, you do not need to book our accomodation - You can either commute or book your own if needed. The advantage of booking ours is that you will be looked after by our team and reside with other students on the work experience programme.

Absolutely. All students will be given a physical certificate to evidence their participation in the course which will be important for their UCAS application as many universities will ask for proof.

Yes! We get many dental students and veterinary students on our courses. The teaching for themes such as Interview and Personal Statement are applicable to all parts of the dentistry and veterinary interviews.
