Studying at Hertfordshire Medical School
This innovative five-year medical degree blends practical clinical experience with emerging developments in medical technology. Students typically have 20–25 hours of weekly contact time, alongside independent study and placement commitments. Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, small-group learning and clinical teaching. The curriculum emphasises active engagement, collaboration and regular reflection, with additional co-curricular opportunities designed to deepen your understanding of patient care.
Years 1 and 2 establish a strong foundation in the core biomedical sciences, including anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. Learning is supported by case-based teaching and early exposure to clinical environments. During this stage, you’ll begin developing essential skills such as history-taking, physical examination and clinical reasoning.
Years 3 to 5 build on this foundation with more advanced clinical experience. You’ll work with increasingly complex cases and spend more time in hospitals and community settings. Students can explore specialist areas such as surgery, paediatrics and internal medicine, gradually taking on greater responsibility within clinical teams and refining the skills required for professional practice.
Assessment combines written examinations, Clinical Competency Assessments (CCAs) and ongoing evaluation of clinical performance and portfolio work.
Students who successfully complete Years 1 to 3 may choose to intercalate between Years 4 and 5, gaining an additional qualification to enhance their academic and clinical profile.
