Hi, my name is Dhruvi Kanadia and I’m a third year dental student at the University of Birmingham. My drive to help people feel more confident in the future with their smile and dedication to learning drove me through the lengthy process of applying to dental school. As well as getting a place on the best course ever (in my opinion!) It also provided me with lots of experience of university applications, interviews, learning techniques, revision and all types of exams.
I put all this experience to good use by tutoring maths to GCSE students with great success. I enjoyed passing on knowledge gained throughout years of dedication to learning. I have tried every method of learning and revision, therefore, I understand the importance of finding a learning method that works for you. I would also establish what the student wants to accomplish. Whether that be; concepts and topics they struggle with, improving their confidence in class, improving their grades or improving their revision techniques. I would use methods the student finds beneficial to teach the concept, always ensuring they fully understand, as this is the key to retaining information.
Besides my studies I hail a plethora of extracurricular activities such as crocheting, cooking, baking, painting, playing the piano, as well as graphic design!
I understand that each student is different, especially in the way that they learn and retain information. Therefore in the first session I will ensure to spend some time on generic questions suited to the level that they are working at to understand what sort of topic areas they struggle with and how they are attempting the question. The lesson will then be catered to each individual student to help get the most out of each lesson. Lessons will be a mix of exam questions, exam techniques but most importantly ensuring the student understands the topic as I think this is the key to learning!
I have been tutoring children since the age of 16, starting off by tutoring children for their 11+ exams. Once I reached university level, I gained more confidence with my tutoring ability therefore I started teaching subjects such as Science and Maths at GCSE level. I have also helped A-Level students by looking at their personal statements as well as helping them with interviews.
My proudest achievement is probably getting into dental school because I never thought that I was capable of it. Achieving a Grade 6 in piano was also like a dream come true because initially I found it quite hard.
