About Me

My name is Sid and I am a Doctor, taking a year out of medicine to pursue my interest in Education. Currently, I am working as an Anatomy Demonstrator at Bristol Medical School. I graduated from Lancaster Medical School in 2020. When I applied, I had interviews for Lancaster and St Georges. I was successful in both these interviews and learnt valuable skills that served me well both for my medical school entrance interview and for further interviews in my career. Most recently, I have been successful in my application for a job as a Core Surgical Trainee.

As I have gone further in education, my approach to work has evolved. This has reflected well in my exam results. I now use an evidence-based strategy, ensuring to focus on spaced repetition and active recall. When learning new concepts I focus on gaining an understanding of the most basic principles and as a result, I am able to remember things well and apply them to problems. These strategies are ones that I pass on to students, helping them develop their revision techniques. For interviews, the most useful strategy for preparation in my experience is to do practice questions. This approach has worked for me on a number of occasions and it is how I focus my time when mentoring students for the interview.

I look forward to working with you!

My teaching style

My aim when teaching is to create a safe and comfortable environment where my students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I try to focus on teaching things from a first principles standpoint so my students fully understand the concept before going further into detail.

For interview practice, I adopt an approach that has been successful for myself and students I have mentored. I focus specifically on practice questions and answers, using high yield interview questions. I help my students refine and develop their answers as well as giving them pointers regarding generic interview technique.

My past experience

I have experience teaching in a number of different settings.

1. Anatomy Demonstrator at the University of Bristol
My current job role involves teaching Medical and Dental Students Anatomy in the Dissection lab. I teach small groups, encouraging problem-solving and group learning and I have also given more formal lecture-style talks from the front to groups of 60-80 students.

2. Mind The Bleep, Surgical Lead
I am the lead for the surgical team of the online medical education platform, Mind The Bleep. In this role, I have been involved in several national teaching programmes over a 1 year period.

3. Virtual OSCE Bank NW London Committee Member
I was on the committee and regularly taught as part of the Virtual OSCE Bank teaching programme in the NW London Deanery.

4. Mentoring Students
I have personally mentored 3 students in their applications for medical school. For 2 of these students I ran regular interview practice sessions with them, focussing on practice questions and refining their answers.

My Proudest Achievements

1. Gaining a Core Surgical Training position.

2. My students who I taught as part of the Virtual OSCE Bank Programme, surprised me at work with a card and some chocolates. The card expressed their gratitude for my help.
