I am a 21-year-old current DHT student studying at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy. Having previously attended KCL for a year to study a different healthcare course, I decided to take a different trajectory in my career path and pursue dentistry. Successfully getting into the course as a first-time applicant, I am passionate about helping others advance in their future dental careers. Coming from a low-achieving school, I can prove that achieving your goals is possible regardless of your situation. I am proactive in finding alternatives to physical work experience to further aid your path towards a future DHT. Coming from an A-level background, I understand the challenges in applying for this course, as experience is a major factor in candidate selection. Therefore, I will help coach your students through the application process with confidence and reassurance. Additionally, I am big on diversity and inclusion in the dental space. As a black woman in the field, I understand the challenges of entering this profession, and I want to help bridge the gap between dentistry and those with less exposure to the field.
My teaching style:
Bullet Points: When guiding students through the application process, i’ll break down application requirements into clear, digestible bullet points. This helps students understand what is expected of them and ensures they address all necessary components effectively.
Mind Maps: I use mind maps to help students organise their thoughts and experiences relevant to their dental school application. This assists them in identifying connections between different aspects, such as academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and super-curricular activities.
Active Recall: Through activities that involve recalling past experiences and achievements, I can help students identify their strengths and unique qualities that they can highlight in their personal statement. This active engagement enhances their ability to articulate their skills and experiences convincingly.
Rehearsal: By conducting mock interviews, I will provide students with the opportunity to practice articulating their motivations for pursuing dental hygiene and Therapy, discussing their experiences, and addressing potential interview questions plus active feedback. This rehearsal process helps them feel more confident and prepared for their actual interviews.
I used to informally coach prospective students on The Student Room with a great success rate.
My proudest achievement is starting up my dental page on instagram. I am quite a private person so putting myself out there was a big step for me.
