About Me

Hi there! My name is Issy O’Brien and I’m a third year veterinary science student at Aberystwyth University, in conjunction with RVC and currently in my third year.

I am available for help on personal statements (mine was one of the best in my year), veterinary interviews, veterinary application in general/advice, A-Level Biology/History and GCSE Biology/Chemistry/History/English Literature.

Previous to this I attended one of the highest scoring colleges in the country, who have a 85% rate of A/A* grades. In my A-Levels I achieved A*, A,A and received 3 interviews (Liverpool, Harper Keele, Aberstwyth/RVC) and 2 offers in my application (Harper Keele/Aberstwyth)- the highest in my year. I was able to attend many workshops put on by my college about applying, which I add to my teaching style for a real range of information.

I am incredibly passionate about all things veterinary, but especially large animals and equine, as I have a small flock of pedigree sheep at home! Prior to/during my application process I completed many weeks of work experience which greatly helped my success, but really helped me to find out why I wanted to be a vet and inspired alot of further reading.

I pride myself on working hard and being friendly and confident towards my students, I’m more than happy to cater to any needs and just want the best for them.

Since working for study mind I have taught over 15 students, and this has only grown my skill and experience as a tutor, so I know exactly what students need.

My teaching style

I have a very flexible teaching style which revolves around what the student wants/needs, and this changes over time and through the application process. If the student is unhappy at any point I am ready to change tact to help them get the most out of my teaching, and maximise their success. I am also a very friendly, approachable individual who wants students to look forward to sessions and have a nice time, rather than dreading it!

I mainly use resources such as practice questions and practice situations e.g. interviews to calm any potential nerves and assess weak and strong areas. I used this method myself and found it very succesful, as well as my college highly recommending it.

I am also surrounded by other veterinary students so am able to ask their advice for a second opinion if necessary e.g. on personal statements.

My past experience

I have previously been a reading mentor at a primary school teaching a range of children, and given advice to numerous peers applying for veterinary school. I also have experience at A-Level level by tutoring those in years below in biology, history and chemistry prior to applying to study mind. Moreover, due to only soing my A-Levels a year ago, the most recent exam specifications are all still very familiar to me, and the best ways to achieve marks. This all has given me vital expertise in teaching and an ideal candidate to be your tutor!

My Proudest Achievements

– Receiving my A-Level results
– Achieving my dream of getting into vet school
– Winning my first championship at livestock competition
– Calving my first cow
