Parent's Guide: BMAT

The BioMedical Admissions Test, or BMAT as it is more commonly known, is one of the admissions tests that some universities use to assess your child’s application to medical and health-related courses. It is a paper based exam, lasting for two hours, and split into three sections. Testing your child’s ability to apply scientific and mathematical knowledge, as well as critical thinking, problem solving and written communication. The exam will usually be sat at your child’s sixth-form, college, or at a nearby sixth-form or college which is operating as a test center.

You will want to sit the BMAT if you are applying to the following universities:

Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Imperial, Keele (overseas students), Lancaster University, UCL, University of Cambridge , University of Leeds (Medicine + Dentistry), University of Manchester, University of Oxford (October only).

BMAT Key Dates

There are multiple sittings of the BMAT examination, with the two UK test dates being in August and October, with further dates for international medical schools. Be sure to check if the universities your child is applying requires them to sit the BMAT, as they will need to be registered and pay the associated costs for your exam prior to sitting.

  • Registration for August BMAT: 24 June – 11 August 2019
  • Registration for October BMAT: 1 September – 1 October 2019
  • Test Dates: August 31st, October 30th 2019. 
  • Results for August BMAT: 20th September 2019
  • Results for November BMAT: 22nd November 2019
