Teacher's Guide: BMAT

The BioMedical Admissions Test, or BMAT as it is more commonly known, is one of the admissions tests that some universities use to assess your student’s application to medical and health-related courses. It is a paper-based exam, lasting for two hours, and split into three sections. It tests a student’s ability to apply scientific and mathematical knowledge, critical thinking, problem solving and written communication. The exam will usually be sat at the school, or at a nearby sixth-form or college operating as a test center.

BMAT Universities

Students will want to sit the BMAT if you are applying to the following universities:

Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Imperial, Keele (overseas students), Lancaster University, UCL, University of Cambridge , University of Leeds (Medicine + Dentistry), University of Manchester, University of Oxford (October only).

BMAT Key Dates

There are multiple sittings of the BMAT examination, with the two UK test dates being in August and October, with further dates for international medical schools. Be sure to check if the universities the student is applying to require them to sit the BMAT, as they will need to be registered and pay the associated costs for their exam prior to sitting.

How can I support my students in the BMAT

There are many ways you can help students with their BMAT preparations, such as online resources, 1-1 tutoring, and by sourcing practice papers (which are available online). Resources range in cost with some online providers offering free trials for online courses, but charging high prices for full access. At Medic Mind we are passionate about providing affordable support for students applying to medical school, making both our 1-1 or group tutoring and 1-day BMAT classroom course as affordable as we can, and with our 92% university success rate, we hope to be able to help you support students in pursuing their dream of becoming a doctor.
