Guide to GAMSAT Poetry Questions

Section 1 of the GAMSAT covers a wide range of different types of passages so the best way to prepare is to tackle each of the different types of units individually. Poetry is almost guaranteed in section 1 of the GAMSAT so it’s important you take time to study it in order to gain top marks in the GAMSAT!

There are various different question types such as interpretation of a specific line, recognition of a poetic technique and identification of feelings or perspective. It’s a good idea to practice as many poetry questions as possible to become comfortable.

Poetry is more straightforward to study than some of the other types of passages in section 1 as there are rules and techniques used to create poetry. Here are some of the poetic devices you should familiarise yourself with:

  • Alliteration
  • Assonance
  • Anaphora
  • Consonance
  • Enjambment
  • Onomatopoeia
  • Personification
  • Rhythm

I definitely recommend remembering these and looking out for them in every poem you read, especially when practicing!
