How Can You Use the UCAT Interim Results 2023?

With many medical and dental schools requiring applicants to sit the UCAT, your UCAT score can have an impact on your medical school application. These medical and dental schools use the UCAT in different ways:

  • Some schools will have a minimum threshold for UCAT scores, which means you will have to score higher than this for your application to be considered
  • Some schools will use the UCAT scores as a benchmark for inviting applicants to interview
  • Some schools will exclude applicants with low situational judgement scores

If you are looking at these UCAT preliminary results and feeling a little disappointed by your score, please remember that there are still approximately 16,000 candidates still to take the UCAT, which can affect the mean score considerably.

For example, last year, the interim score was 2554 but the overall mean score (when all candidates had sat the test) was 2500. So don’t be too dismayed yet!

It is important to understand how each medical or dental school will use the UCAT score so that you can make an informed decision on which schools to apply.

FAQs

What are my options if I have a low UCAT score?

Do not despair if you feel that your UCAT score is low. Some medical schools place less weighting on UCAT scores compared to other considerations such as predicated grades and interview. You may want to consider a medical school that requires the BMAT or you may decide to take a gap year and retake the UCAT next year. Some candidates consider studying medicine in Europe, where many medical schools do not require applicants to take an admissions test.

What is the average UCAT score 2023?

According to the UCAT interim scores, the mean score is currently 2568. However, it is important to remember that this is based on candidates that took the test up to 15 September 2023. With approximately 16,000 candidates still to take the test, the final mean score could change considerably.

Do medical schools look at individual subtest scores?

Medical schools all use the UCAT slightly differently in the application process. Some medical schools will give higher weighting to some subtests, whereas others will require an overall minimum score. It is important to note that some medical schools will also consider the SJT score, with some candidates being excluded if they have a low SJT score. It is important to research the individual requirements of each university where you are thinking of applying.
